Moving Thoughts from a Tweenager’s Perspective

If you find yourself contemplating a move in the upcoming year, chances are your mind has been buzzing with various scenarios, dreams, and potential challenges that lie ahead.

Among the thoughts swirling around, you may have pondered:

  • How can I ensure I get the best possible price for my current home?
  • Where are the sought-after catchment areas for the finest schools?
  • How will my family cope with the transition?

When it comes to involving your family in the process, particularly if you have children, our suggestion is to make them feel like active participants. Listening to their thoughts, concerns, and ideas can go a long way in helping them, as well as yourself, adjust to the changes.

We recently spoke with a ‘tweenager,’ a child between the ages of 10 and 12, whose family recently sold their home and moved to a new one. We wanted to know what was going through her mind during this significant transition, and her insights are truly enlightening.

Anticipation
One of her most exciting thoughts was about finally having her own room, no longer sharing it with her younger sister.

Friendship Proximity
She was thrilled about moving closer to her friends, imagining the fun times they’d share.

Curiosity and Eagerness
The new house held a sense of adventure for her. She couldn’t wait to explore every nook and cranny once her parents made their selection.

Anxiety and Concern
However, there were moments of worry, particularly when a hiccup in the property chain delayed their move. It left her feeling anxious about whether they’d actually get the new house.

The Silver Lining
One of the most delightful aspects of moving to a new home, she pointed out, was the family’s newfound ability to have a pet dog.

Expansive Play Area
With a bigger house, she had more space to enjoy playful activities with her sister. Games like hide and seek and tag became even more exciting, and she now had ample room to practice gymnastics outdoors.

Bathroom Bonanza
With more bathrooms available in the new house, it became a practical blessing for their large family.

The Challenge of Packing
Yet, there were moments of frustration when their house was all packed up, and she couldn’t locate her belongings.

Words of Wisdom
We also asked this young ‘tweenage’ mover for some advice she’d give to others in her age group facing a similar situation. Here’s what she had to share:

  • Don’t hesitate to talk to someone about your feelings if you’re feeling anxious about the move.
  • Focus on the exciting aspects of moving, such as having a bigger room, being closer to friends, and exploring a new home.
  • Always try to find the positive side of things.
